Writers have observed that a unique characteristic of music is its freedom from real images. Music is also referred to as "the universal language ." This page will discuss some ways that we express ourselves through music. This expression may tell us who we are. This expression may describe the time in which we live.

We recognize our friends and family by their voices. Each voice is different and original. Music has been created in different styles over recorded history. Each style reflects the feeling of the people at that time.

In our American history many styles of music have been cultivated. From the military fife and drum cadence through the machine-like electronic pulse of contemporary rock, each style is unique. Let's take a look at some of the music that is available to us today.


From the list of choices, pick the style of music which is the least familiar to you. Spend some time exploring this musical style. Then explore the the remaining choices.
